Wasn’t it Neil Sedaka that sang: Breaking up is hard to do, all those decades ago?  Breaking up is a lot harder on the dumpee, who, until they got kicked in the teeth, thought the sun shone and set on their partners.  “Jaiye and I were together for four years, on and off when he broke up with me”, recalled Kate, now 28, and into a new relationship after battling the symptoms of a broken heart.

An excuse for us senior girls to let it rip without any disapproving male glare. Any man that showed up (and there were very few of them) just dropped their wives, craned their necks suspiciously through the car windows to see if they could peep into the garden where the party was held, before reluctantly speeding off.

Florence sat next to me in the car and showed me a hotel room key.  “You should have left that at the reception”, I told her. “What if you lose it”, “It’s not my key”, she whispered into my ears.  “It’s the key to Eric’s room”. My eyes widened.  So soon?  “He wants me to go and wait for him in his room”, she continued excitedly. 

So I went, bounded up the stairs to her bedroom and opened the door. I watched transfixed as I saw this man’s bum in the air making frantic love to the mother my child!  When she saw me, her eyes widened, but she didn’t say anything. I went back downstairs and waited.
